Fibromyalgia comes from the Latin words fibro- (fibrous tissue, the ligaments and tendons), -my- (the muscles) and –algia (tenderness and pain).
Fibromyalgia is also known as Fibromyalgia syndrome, fibro, and by the initials FM or FMS.
It is a chronic pain condition that affects the muscles, tendons and ligaments, but not the joints. It is a condition that challenges both patients and healthcare professionals. Symptoms are wide ranging and wide spread, including amplified pain and other sensitivities, sleep disturbance, and chronic fatigue. As yet there is no cure for Fibromyalgia, but there are treatments that help reduce symptoms.
