Treatments

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and beware of magic bullets.

There are always people who try to take advantage of desperate people, and let's face it, we all end up feeling desperate about our pain and other fibromyalgia symptoms at some point. There are many people who claim to have a cure for fibromyalgia. If there was a cure, why on earth would we all still have fibro? There are many treatments that can help, but as usual, not every treatment helps every fibro patient to the same extent. You have to keep trying though.

The Treatment of Fibromyalgia

IMPORTANT! You should always check with your medical professionals and do your own research before trying any new medication, remedy or treatment. Look at the possible side effects and contra-indications (drugs that shouldn’t be taken together). Never discount the value of anecdotal evidence. Talk to other people about what you are considering trying. Remember that what works well for one person, could put another in bed with adverse reactions.

You should also weigh up the benefits that you are getting once you are using a new medication, therapy, supplement or treatment, versus the side effects. Is the amount of relief worth it? Review your medications regularly and keep a pain diary with notes on how you feel.

Medications

There are three main groups of medications that are prescribed for patients with fibromyalgia...

Antidepressants are very common. Fibromyalgia patients often suffer from depression. A lot of antidepressants also work on the chemicals in the brain that are to do with how pain signals are interpreted. Quite often patients are on more than one antidepressant, as different ones affect different symptoms.

Analgesics are pain killers. There are the common over-the-counter types, like paracetamol and aspirin, through to the very strong opioids including Morphine and synthetic opioids like Tramadol. They work to varying degrees and are often taken to deal with pain from other conditions like arthritis.

Anti-seizure Medications can also help with some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Restless legs, cramps and muscle spasms are common amongst fibromyalgia patients

There are many other medications on the market that can help with various fibro symptoms. Some find that a medication that they are taking for another illness may help some of their fibro symptoms.

Non-drug Therapies

There are many treatment options that do not include medications and they are quite often of greater benefit to people with Fibromyalgia than other treatments.

Physical therapies include physiotherapy, chiropractic, tai-chi, yoga, exercise and the like. You can benefit a great deal from improved mobility and increased strength and stamina. Benefits include less pain, better balance and mental/psychological improvements.

Eating well, and where necessary, taking supplements, will help with your quality of life, not just with fibromyalgia, but all aspects of your health and well-being. Many foods can be triggers for Fibromyalgia as well.
