Physical Therapy for Fibromyalgia
Massage can help reduce pain and increase mobility. There are many types of massage, and each practitioner has ‘their own way’ of doing things. Most fibro patients prefer a more gentle massage. Massage can help reduce muscle tightness, and general body tension. Just having a massage… that feeling of spoiling yourself… can be a tremendous benefit as well. Ask you friends if they can recommend someone, and don’t be afraid to ask a massage therapist if they know about fibro and if they have other clients with fibro.
Chiropractic treatment is another non-medication type of treatment that has been shown to benefit fibromyalgia patients. Like massage there are variations and types of chiropractic treatment. Treatment can help with joint pain caused by constant spasming and cramping caused by fibromyalgia. Pain can be reduced and mobility increased.
Physiotherapy focuses on the muscular, skeletal and neurological systems of the body. It is usually long term, or at least an extended series of treatments that can help with mobility and reduced pain levels. Strategies for managing fibro symptoms are also often learned. Physio may be uncomfortable, even painful, as muscles are stretched and exercised.
Tai-chi and Yoga are forms of exercise that can be very gentle and relaxing. They help with mobility by stretching and working on balance. They can also help with your mental wellbeing.
Acupuncture is considered an ‘alternative’ therapy in western countries. Results can vary. Some do get great benefit from it.
It is said that exercise is always good for you. It can be very difficult to get the motivation to even go for a walk when you are in pain or depressed, but there are so many benefits. As well as increasing mobility and helping maintain a healthy body, it is good to just get out of the house. The main thing is to start small and build up slowly. Just walk for a few minutes for a week. Add on just one minute the next week and so on. You may experience an increase in pain to start with, but you will increase your stamina and can reduce your symptoms by maintaining a lower body weight.
